Changes Afoot: An Update

It’s been awhile, haven’t it?

First of all, a quick status update on the Notes themes.

Notes Blog hits 1.0 in a little bit, I’m working on this one right now actually. It might or might not be released on wordpress.org this year, but you’ll be able to download it soon enough at least.
Notes Mag won’t get any love until next year. Too much work, sorry about that.
All other Notes projects are on hold.

That didn’t sound too good, did it? Don’t worry, it’s not so bad.

You see, as it turns out a lot of people are building cool sites on Notes Blog, and I’m questioning the need for some of the planned things because of this. In fact, I’m not even sure that Notes Mag should be a stand-alone theme, maybe it’ll end up as settings for Notes Blog or as a child theme.

Moving on, there are some changes due to notesblog.com as well. It will be relaunched as more of a landing page for the themes, along with quick links to resources and possibly a support forum if the need arise. The development cycles are so skewered right now, it feels a bit silly to have this thing in blog format. Support questions get buried and so on, better to blog about WordPress some other way. So that’s happening, hopefully within a few weeks time.

Finally, I’ve got some nice child theme ideas lined up for Notes Blog. If there’s time you’ll get those to play with over the Holidays, but I might not be able to pull it off. The notesblog.com changes take precedence.

Cleaning house

I’m cleaning house with sites and domains and projects and whatnots. That means that there’ll be some changes with notesblog.com and how themes are demonstrated. More later, this is just a heads-up.

Notes Blog Release Imminent

Notes Blog Core Theme 1.0.3 won’t hit wordpress.org

I’m afraid I can’t submit the bugfix release for Notes Blog Core Theme, since wordpress.org won’t accept themes with “Theme” in the title. I’m totally fine with that, but it seems I can’t change the name, and obviously this rule didn’t exist when Core was submitted. Get the update here. More soon.

Update to Notes Blog Core Theme Submitted

I have submitted an update, primarily bug fixes but also some minor additions (nothing that will break your child themes), of the Notes Blog Core Theme to wordpress.org. Version 1.0.3 should be available there shortly, but you can get it here too if you can’t wait to update. Not to be mixed up with the Notes Blog theme. More on the future of Core later.

Notes Blog Public Beta

Friends, below is the public beta version of the brand new Notes Blog theme. It will be on wordpress.org when it is time for the final 1.0 release, but if you can’t wait then by all means try the beta.

It is under these conditions that I’m releasing it, so pay attention! If you download the beta version, you promise to

keep it up to date – new versions will be posted here
change it to the 1.0 version on wordpress.org when it is available
use it and use it well

I also ask you not to repost the theme as a download on your own site, ans urge you to create child themes rather than hacking the actual code. Obviously the theme is licensed under GPL, as promised.

Ideas, suggestions, additions, praise and criticism is greatly appreciated in the comments.

Now Running WordPress 3.1

You might be interested to know that this site is running on WordPress 3.1 RC2. Obviously the upcoming Notes Blog works perfectly well with this release, and will in fact require it. Expect the first public release when 3.1 is out!

Now We’re Talking!

As you’ve probably seen, this very site is looking a bit different. Say hi to Notes Blog, detailed in a previous post and showcased twice as well. The public beta version is due very soon but I thought it was about time we switched over to the latest version here at the very least.

Some Sites Using Notes Blog Right Now

Notes Blog is out in private beta (get the background here in case you missed in) which means that some people are using it already. I showed you ProToolerBlog before, but here are some other shots of the theme in action.

Let’s start with the blog for WordCamp Stockholm 2010, just using built-in features to change the background image and so on.

The one below is new media maven Joakim Jardenberg’s blog, sticking with the basic settings mostly.

Björn Sennbrink is working with the widget area between the menu and the content using a child theme:

Finally, brand new Swedish Apple blog Mapple is also using a child theme, just to change the fonts.

Notes Blog is due soon, for all to have and play with. Use it as is, or build a child theme on it.

HFO WordPress Child Theme For Notes Blog Released

Björn Sennbrink have released a child theme for the upcoming Notes Blog theme, which is out in private beta at the moment. It is called HFO WordPress Child Theme and displays posts from a custom post type on the front page, rather than the default post listing. You might want to hack it for your own needs.
