Notes Blog Public Beta

Friends, below is the public beta version of the brand new Notes Blog theme. It will be on wordpress.org when it is time for the final 1.0 release, but if you can’t wait then by all means try the beta.

It is under these conditions that I’m releasing it, so pay attention! If you download the beta version, you promise to

  • keep it up to date – new versions will be posted here
  • change it to the 1.0 version on wordpress.org when it is available
  • use it and use it well

I also ask you not to repost the theme as a download on your own site, ans urge you to create child themes rather than hacking the actual code. Obviously the theme is licensed under GPL, as promised.

Ideas, suggestions, additions, praise and criticism is greatly appreciated in the comments.

Without further ado:

Enjoy.

Hello, I am currently trying to configure this theme and I’d like to know how can I add images to the blog home? So far they show up in the single post, but not on the homepage.

    • The theme uses the excerpt in listings per default, which means that it automatically pulls an excerpt from your post. You can fill out your own excerpt using the excerpt box on your Edit Post screen (you might have to enable it in Screen Options, top right).

Hello, I am building a visitor guide for my homeland in Greece. I have tried several modifications to the theme up to now, creating a child theme of course. Everything works like a charm. Thank you TDH :)

Hi Thord… What is the difference between Notes Blog Public and Notes Blog Core?
Also, is there updates to the themes and all which are posted in the Smashing WordPress book 1st ed.
    Thanks!

    • Notes Blog Core Theme is more of a building block, whereas Notes Blog is ready for use right away. At least that’s the idea, more on the Core Theme and what’s in store for it in the near future.

    Hej Thord

I’m working on a child theme from Notes Blog, and trying to get my front page header to display on single post and pages – with no success! Can you recommend anything?

  12. Hi

I am using a similar theme at my site about Raccoon Deterrent which is called Neoclassical but this has not been updated for a while so I am thinking of switching and considering your theme. Just trying to understand the difference between Notes Core and Notes Blog. Is Core the framework and Blog the child theme? Or are they both integrated into a single theme in the latest release?

  13. Martin says:

Hello, I have pretty successfully, with a hefty amount of CSS tweaking put a site up using a child theme of Notes Blog Core. I enjoyed using it. If I move to Notes Blog for that site would it mean starting from scratch or would my child theme cut the mustard?

  14. Hi,

I am a big fan of your wordpress book. I first got a peek when my friend showed it to me but I was unable to get a copy in India.
I borrowed book from my friend, we almost engage into a fight to read the book first. I am waiting for a nice free magazine theme. Hoping Notes blog 1 will be a blast.

  15. Ayeo,

I’ve just purchased your book “Smashing WordPress” second edition. I must say I’m already a fan. Your book has already helped me tremendously and I’m going to be trying your notesblog theme.

    Happy wordpressing!

I’m downloading your theme after purchasing Smashing WordPress Second Edition. I’m looking forward to learning more about creating child themes and “Pimping” WordPress to do my bidding. Thank you!

    Hi Thord!
I can’t wait for the 1.0 version! I’m starting to build my own theme as a child of 0.2.9.1 verision. Will it work with 1.0? When will it be out?
    Thanks!

re: Notes Blog download, v. 1.0 release date, expected change log

    Hello Thord.

I’m enjoying working through your book Smashing WordPress: Beyond the Blog 2nd ed., look forward to seeing the 3rd edition, and am using the 2nd edition so far to adapt our company’s pending deeply revised website (not yet posted).

As you advise in your chapter 4, I intend to build our company’s theme as a child to your theme “Notes Blog”. I see that the final release of Notes Blog v. 1.0 has been due out soon for perhaps a year, and that you have been advising readers to check back with your site to look for it.

I see your comment that as of Feb. 13 you had no ETA, as well as your post, which appears undated in my browser: “Notes Blog Release Imminent”. I’m also confused by mentions of v. 0.9 that seem to attribute a delay in release of 1.0 to slowness of WordPress reviewing and approval, and by links that I expect to point to v. 0.9 but land at v. 0.2.9.1

When do you now expect to release Notes Blog v. 1.0?
What are the major changes that it will include?
What version should we use in the meantime, and what is the address of its download page?

Knowing an anticipated date will make checking back more compelling. Knowing the major expected changes will help your users to plan our development work around your schedule.

    Thanks for your good work!

    Sincerely,
    Lars

    • You can go ahead and build on the current version of Notes Blog, the bump to 1.0 will change some things but as long as you use the classes and IDs you’ll be fine.

I’m utterly swamped, but I hope to release 1.0 in the coming weeks. Fingers crossed!
