With the Notes Blog Core theme in public beta right now, I thought I’d get the wishlist thing rolling. What do you want and how do you want it?
I’ll get us started, these are things that are on my radar right now.
- Support for Pages widget in the Submenu widget area.
- Built-in support for Subscribe to comments plugin.
- Single post browsing (Previous/Next post).
- Separate comments and trackbacks.
And bug fixes on top of that, of course. I’ve gotten a few bug reports already, so thanks for that. Keep ‘em coming, either in the comments to the beta public post, or via email as outlined in the readme files.
If you got something you want me to add, or change, give a shout in the comments, or contact me directly.
Smashing WordPress: Beyond the Blog is now available in its second edition. The book is revised and updated, sporting even more Notes Blog galore, all in full color.
My latest book is called Smashing WordPress Themes: Making WordPress Beautiful and is all about theming. The book is available now from your favorite online retailer (or physical bookstore).
option to change links colors, background color etc from options panel ?
That would be possible, but it would bloat the theme. You could just create a simple child theme consisting of just the link overrides and achieve the same result. What do you think?
yep, a child theme would do, actually, I am playing with a child theme now .. but, for people who love to do things without coding …………..
True enough. I think I’m sort of missing them here though, the idea with Core is to build child themes on top of it. Might actually release it as a stand-alone in the future, with all the bling… That’s a thought.
yea, you are right .. making the core theme a platform for people develop on, is important

If you use a lot of tags (like in this post on my website) the area beneath the post’s headline gets a bit cluttered. Not only are there a lot of tags, there’s the comment count, author, date, category and timestamp as well.
I think it would feel a lot less cluttered it the vertical line before the comment count waried its length depending on the number of tags. If there’s three rows of tags the line is three rows long, creathing two rows of white space beneath the comment count. This would make the information more accessible.
Thanks for the input. Yes, perhaps. I’m not entirely happy with this section at all actually, it looks cluttered with too much data and will no matter what. I could fix it of course, but that would mean that the control of these elements (author, comments, tags, categories) would be limited in child themes. Will take this into account and figure something out, most likely just more spacing around the comments link though.
Or you could move the tags to the end of the post? Spread the clutter around a bit.
Another idéa is to “unbolden” the tags etc. Eg:”By Name Filed in category Tagged with tag1, tag,2 …” It will at least reduce the amount of black and make the area look lighter.
I’m considering a setting for this, on the options page, but it probably won’t make it to 1.0.
True, however this is easily managed in a child theme, and the average user usually don’t tag as much as you do, so I think I’ll leave that. But again, I’ll let it spin another turn in my head before releasing the next beta. Thanks!
good work. I can definitely see using this as the core of several sites with graphics and backgrounds implemented to differentiate…
It doesn’t get much better, simply.
Thanks, I’m happy you like it!
