Carmine Lives: A Simple Core Child Theme

Notes Blog Core is built to be used both stand-alone and as a theme framework. That means that you can build child themes that rely on the Core theme, but works as stand-alone themes. I’ll get to that in a Manual post later on, for now this is what you can do with Notes Blog Core and some child theming in an hour or so.

Below is a screenshot of Carmine Lives, a Swedish blog about videogames, Japan, and other nonsense from the mind of my good friend Rickard Olsson.

The child theme consists of a style.css file, obviously, and a header.php template file for some minor hacks. There’s obviously the logo graphic as well.

Later on I’ll explain in detail how to build your very own child theme based on Notes Blog Core.

  1. I really like this child theme. Would be great if you could have a few tutorials and code examples on how to do this, plus how to style an about me top right widget with links to all your social spaces.

    Hey Thord,

    1) I purchased your Smashing WordPress book. I have to say I have read many WP books and this one is by far the best. Excellent work!

    2) Do you have any deeper documentation on how build a child theme?

    3) In the chapter where you discuss the jobboard theme and walk through it as an example. I went to the URL (/core/jobboard) that is stated in the book for the jobboard child theme and I don’t find anything. Am I missing something? Has it moved?

    Thanks Thord

    • Thanks for the kind words, and the review link as well – much appreciated!

As for your questions, no I have not delved deeper into child themes anywhere yet. I will though, but for now you’ll have to be satisfied by the chapters in the book. The JobBoard theme should be up now, let me know if you have any problems with it!

        Man you so rock!!

I bought the book first cause I love smashing mag content and two I wanted to become a good wordpress theme dev and your book was perfect.

Also, a few of the main sites I have been working on are jobboards and I was using a modified version classipress, but I hacked the core theme and upgrading is always painful, not to mention the theme is overkill for my needs (I just wanted a simple jobboard theme.)

With your book, I have improved my skills, learned child theming (lifesaver), and got the simple, clean jobboard theme that I have been looking for.

Like a kid in a candy store :)

        Thanks Thord!
